August 04 The War of the FlowersCurrently I am re-reading a book that I bought and I thought I might just pop a quick review as I enjoyed this book so much:
Around about this time last year I was looking for a book to read on my holidays while in Cairns Up North. While browsing the books in the airport newsagency I came across a new paperback novel by Tad Williams. First up the title really peaked my interest "The War of the Flowers", typically war and flowers don't go together. Next the cover grabbed me with it blurry yet dark looking landscape with very good use of colour. The size of the book, the book is huge at over 1,000 pages of fairly small type. But what truly got me over the line was the description on the back cover, I was truly intrigued.
The book is centred around Theo, a down on his luck middle age singer really going nowhere in life. Without spoiling to much the first part of this book really got me annoyed at some of the characters in the book wondering how they could treat Theo in such a way, Williams really writes this very well and looking back he set's up several key events that occur in the climax of the book during these stages.
As it turns out the Flowers are powerful house's in another land and they are seeking Theo for a dark purpose of which even he knows nothing about. Williams writes Theo's journey in wonderful dialogue and gives the right amount of detail about Theo's surroundings with boring the reader (masterful). I often found myself unable to stop reading this book late at night due to the brilliant way that Williams writes some of the dramatics’ putting wildly vivid descriptions of both beautiful and bloodthirsty events.
If I was to have anything negative about this book it would be that the ending still leaves me with a couple of questions including area's on "The Clover Effect", "The King and Queen" and "Theo's future". I guess this leaves some questions to the next book though.............
Finally, if your looking for a book that isn't quite Science Fiction, isn't quite fantasy and is very entertaining, I can really recommend this book.
